The countdown to the release of James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi epic thriller “Avatar” has started.

Twentieth Century Fox has announced that the movie will have its world premiere in London’s Leicester Square on December 10.

A few lucky audiences have already caught a sneak peek at snippets of the highly-anticipated film, which is tipped as having the potential to change the face of cinema.

Do you like 3D films? Are you planning to watch "Avatar"? Tell us in the comments below

A 25-minute preview was screened at Comic-Con in July to glowing reviews, and a 15-minute clip of the movie was shown to sold-out audiences in select theaters around the world on “Avatar Day” in August.

In a year of big 3D releases, including Disney’s "Toy Story" and Pixar’s "Up," "Avatar" - which tells the story of a war between humans and the native species of the jungle planet Pandora - is turning into the year’s most hyped.

The movie, which combines digital 3D technology with Cameron’s trademark epic storytelling, is being hailed as revolutionary. That it is Cameron's first film since record-smashing "Titanic" more than a decade ago is only serving to increase the feverish anticipation.

"Avatar" is released worldwide on December 18

If the 15 minute clip we saw last August is any indication, the full length feature will be unwatchable in 3D. We got nauseous after 5 minutes. Visually it was very spectacular though.

I don't know exactly why, but some 3D films look more 3D, as others after a bit of watching, become like regular 2D. Monsters vs. Aliens flies out of the screen. Ice Age 3, Coraline, etc; don't. Personally, I believe the big change will come for sure when 3D glasses are not necessary.
I'd like to see AVATAR as seems Cameron will do the kind of film that comes our of the screen. However, its funny to see the aliens look like pan, a mith of ancient times.

I will definitely be seeing this one. Even without the 3D effect (which I hope lives up to its hype) it sounds like an interesting story, and one that is presented by a master storyteller.

This movie looks amazing, might be a new sci-fi classic!

I hate 3D movies and will seek out a theater where it's being screened in 2D if at all possible. I'll skip it if I can't find one.

Rorschach   November 5th, 2009 1628 GMT

But will it beat Terminator or Alien?

3D movies require 3D glasses. I wear prescription glasses and I don't want to wear 3D glasses over my eye glasses. Kind of hard to see when your $500 eye glasses are covered with scratches. Also, I bought 3D glasses for my children for a movie and then took the glasses to another 3D movie at the same theater a few weeks later. The entry price for the first movie was about $11 a person because we had to buy glasses for the movie. And the entry price for the second movie was...$11 per person, even though we had our own 3D glasses. We got new glasses the second time, but the old glasses worked just as well with the second movie. Did 3D improve the movies? No, not at all.

3D has never been first rate.. I don't suspect this change anything...

it will be another 100 years before they get it right..

and we'll all be dead..

Nope. Not gonna see this. A good story and good acting are what draws you into the film. 3D won't make the 'cartoon' more real.

This will hopefully be a new epic sci-fi classic. Cameron is a great storyteller and the effects look amazing!
- Some people can't see in 3D and some get sick from watching it.
- I'm sure they will be showing in 2D as well.
- I suspect the story, characters and acting will be top quality as well. It won't be just an effects movie.
- I hope he uses the 3D as a "window into another world" instead of the gimmicky "poking things out of the screen at you".
Can't wait! Go James!

I have glasses and when I put on 3D glasses in front of my glasses I kind of get a little sick.

So many cynics...

I am going to see it, I cant say I am a big fan of the 3d movies I have seen so far just because of the loss of resolution, but it looks like a great sci-fi to me anyway and I always enjoy that.

Why not go and have a look rather than complaining about all the things you have no control over.

The same people complaining about how this isn't going to make a difference with the presentation of the movie are the same people who held onto VHS for a decade longer than they should have because those newfangled DVDs wouldn't make the difference either.

You're all luddites.

Vinay   November 5th, 2009 2057 GMT

Atleast for the hype and being different in concept and story, I am waiting for it to see.....

Mari   November 5th, 2009 2058 GMT

Sam Worthington stars in it... does anyone know how much of him we get to see? It sounds like he's mostly in Avatar form, instead of his normal gorgeous human self.

kate   November 5th, 2009 2141 GMT

I loved the movie
I want to see the movie ealry~!!!

Alex   November 5th, 2009 2257 GMT

I don't know why they don't design better fitting 3d glasses, perhaps like goggles, where the colored lens completely encompasses your vision – would be much better.

Craig Young   November 5th, 2009 2343 GMT

If the effects alone are the draw that's not a good thing.

Cameron's work in Aliens and Terminator was augmented and not carried by effects. These were powerful and well told stories and I'm a bit doubtful about this one – the excess of hype makes me suspect.

This intergalactic tale has the potential to be a multi-cultural tale and perhaps addresses issues similar to that of District 9. But I fear it'll be a story overwhelmed with American bravado. We've had enough of those.

Torsteinn   November 5th, 2009 2358 GMT

Not to sound too pessimistic, but this sure has the potential to become just a gigantic special effects showreel covering up a tired old storyline or overshadowing a fresh one. Lets hope Cameron hasn't been hanging out too much with J.J. Abrams and George Lucas...

Srao   November 6th, 2009 2127 GMT

Waste of time on movies ...get real in life

Leon   November 13th, 2009 556 GMT

Lots of technophobes and ignoramuses here.

These are the probably the same people who can't see the difference between VHS and DVD, and between DVD and Blu-Ray. The next big leap is 3-D, and these same people will say the same thing - that it's no big deal and that it does not make a difference. They should just go back to the caves where they come from, and let the rest of us more evolved humans enjoy the great pleasures that new technologies bring.

I am looking forward to watching Avatar, and no, not in VHS!
