LONDON, England - Can Mickey Rourke make one of the comebacks of modern movie history, bagging a Best Actor Oscar for his role as a fallen fighter in "The Wrestler?"

Mickey Rourke's arresting movie comeback as Randy Robinson, has some serious Oscar beef.
Mickey Rourke's arresting movie comeback as Randy Robinson, has some serious Oscar beef.

Don't bet against it after watching  Darren Aronofsky's harrowing drama, which took top awards on the autumn festival circuit and has just opened in the U.S.

Rourke - whose bad-boy existence has fed tabloids for the best part of two decades - confronts the part of fallen 1980s ring legend Randy "The Ram" Robinson, getting by on a diet of painkillers and steroids and at one point lamenting: "I'm an old broken-down piece of meat."

Wrestling traditionally presents itself as prime-time pantomime; in contrast Aronofsky takes a naturalistic, semi-documentary stance, revealing a contrived theater of gore, replete with staple guns, barbed wire and self-cutting as stage props.

Despite acknowledgment, even reverence, from fellow ring stars, Robinson looks toward stripper Cassidy (Marisa Tomei), also engaged in a world of fakery, for solace; and his estranged student daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) for reconciliation.

But he is a relic fighting against time and his attraction to the limelight, as primitive and retro as his bleach-yellow scrag of hair or the 1980s bouffant rock that soundtracks the drama.

Photography sets the narrative within a series of interiors - the inside of trailer homes and locker rooms, supermarkets and strip clubs - to emphasize how Robinson is trapped in his addiction to the limelight. When the drama does switch to exteriors, it is into a chilly landscape washed in gray hues and slab browns. Rarely does Aronofsky - himself making a minor comeback after "The Fountain"(2006) - allow the camera to go wide.

Toward the movie's end there are a couple of minor narrative mistrips - but they are not enough to derail Aronofsky's intent nor Rourke's startling and raw performance.

Of course it's easy to say that Rourke is simply building on his own life experiences for the role (a seasoned boxer himself, he has referenced his wild times during publicity junkets for the movie).

But that notion suggests Rourke is somehow channeling and not acting; and with "The Wrestler" he draws from Robinson a fragility and vulnerability, even tenderness, that can only provoke a sympathetic wince from audiences.

For Rourke has made a comeback with serious Oscar beef. And in an awards season largely devoid of last year's clutch of masculine features - "No Country For Old Men", "There Will Be Blood", "Eastern Promises" - his performance sets him well apart from rival nominees. Whether that will help him with awards voters is another issue.

As movie resurrections go, Rourke's performance is up there with Oscar-nominee John Travolta's turn in the higher-profile "Pulp Fiction" (1994), which helped parlay his then-stranded career into longer-term gains. Here's hoping Rourke can do similar.

Who do you rate for the best movie comebacks - be they in front or behind the camera?

Be Affleck ..directing.."Gone Baby Gone". His personal life affected his movie career somewhat (The Bennifer days); but he took a step back and excelled.

This will be one of the years best movie by far

Barry B. Rosenfeld   December 19th, 2008 1505 GMT

BEEN A FAN OF MICKEY SINCE THE POPE OF GREEWICH VILLAGE. I AM A NATIVE NEW YORKER AND IN GREENICH VILLAGE MICKEY DID A GREAT JOB OF MIRRORING THOSE EARLY LIFE SHALLOW HOPES FOR SUCCESS. I AM ALSO A LIFELONG WRESTLING FAN AND ALWAYS FELT THE TEARFUL LIFE THOSE PEOPLE MUST LEAD ESPECIALLY WITH BENOIT OF LATE AND FLAIR'S RETIREMENT. BUT HOLY COW DOES MICKEY NAIL THIS PART. CONGRADULATIONS.

Leo from Boston   December 19th, 2008 1506 GMT

Mickey R. is the MAN.
I hate when I see the words "back from the dead".
That must suck for an actor thats put so much on film to be thought of as dead. My favorite character in Sin City was his character, so for me he hasn't gone any where.
Keep trucking Brother ....

Charlie Stella   December 19th, 2008 1512 GMT

My wife and I saw it the night it opened in NY and it equals (if not surpasses) his performance in Barfly (which was wonderful). I add it to my top 10-12 movies of all time (along with Barfly and Pope of Greenwich Village). The Wrestler blows the rest of the field away. Bravo to everybody involved in this project–pure genius across the board (Tomei, Wood, Aronofsky and the wild man himself, Mickey Rourke).

Ern   December 19th, 2008 1516 GMT

HIs performance in Sin CIty reminded me what a good actor he actually is.

FullTimeNinjas Dot Com   December 19th, 2008 1517 GMT

People also tend to forget that although Rourke had a pretty good physique, he still went through a pretty impressive physical transformation as well... bulking on even more muscle than he had prior to the project.

hemnebob   December 19th, 2008 1521 GMT

i can't look at him...
his image turns my stomach and whether his facial change is due to
cosmetic surgery, drug usage or just plain alcohol...i just cannot
watch him. if his role is great then good for him, if he wins a statue...
good for him but i predict either way? he will tumble again.

blech.

mary Kinney   December 19th, 2008 1527 GMT

oh mikey he's so fine.

Maria Maria   December 19th, 2008 1553 GMT

I am so glad to see Mickey has gotten a roll that will turn his career around!!. Actors go thru their spells of ups and downs like anyone else. I've been a fan and will continue to be a true fan of him. So Way to go Mickey.............Do you!!

idaartist   December 19th, 2008 1553 GMT

Oh Mickey, he sure used to be so fine, but I have to agree with hemnebob.... what happened to him? yuck!!

Ugly or not, I am still looking forward to seeing The Wrestler

mjlaxnmd   December 19th, 2008 1557 GMT

Comeback? Only if he can continue to find roles that play to his appearance as a hulking mess of a man. He may just be able to do that, Ron Pearlman has made a career out of wearing makeup and playing "ugly" characters, but the chances of him being a leading man in a romcom, love story, or even big-budget action fest are pretty slim. I could see him continuing to play heavies, tragic figures, or deep but troubled villians (maybe a future Batman baddie) but I doubt that his appearance will allow for much more. He has great talent but talent isn't valued as much as appearance in Hollywood as the pretty faces with zero talent carrying many movies would attest to.

BobC   December 19th, 2008 1603 GMT

Right on the money GUS! While I may not care for Ben Affleck in front of the camera, behind it is another story. Gone Baby Gone was simply amazing.

Hopefully Rourke can get his career back on track with this one.

Annette Cardenas   December 19th, 2008 1607 GMT

Mr. Rourke is a wonderful actor. Why does the media jump on the bandwagon everytime an actor has a little trouble in their life? No one's life is a fairytale. The stupid media can't wait for someone to fall. Like John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, I guess these people think one movie makes the man worthy of the golden statuette when in actuality every movie/film/commercial made by an actor took him to that one place where they will get that OSCAR NOD!!

Rob M from Horsham   December 19th, 2008 1611 GMT

Easily the best male performance of the year but i have a feeling Rourke's behaviour over the last couple of months (and decades) will stop him getting the big prize. The academy will go for a safe old stalwart like Langella in Frost/Nixon or even Eastwood in Gran Torino as an excuse not to give Mickey his due. Hope he wins though it's thoroughly deserved. Great film too.

Matt   December 19th, 2008 1611 GMT

I saw it last night and it is gut-wrenching. The urban decay captured in the backgrounds, the shlubby, grotesque people, the stupid 80's music all juxtapozed with the American flag illustrate the bankruptcy of America. Mickey Rourke delivers an ugly metaphor for the destruction of the American Man. The Buddha himself could not handle the suffering depicted in this movie.

Sierra   December 19th, 2008 1614 GMT

He has talent as an actor for sure. I remember seeing him in a few movies in the early 80's and noted at that time he had potential to be one of the best. As far as his personal life goes, that's for him and him only. It's very disappointing to read some of the comments from people who are so hung up on his looks or that he did drugs, etc. – anyhow, that just defines the people who make these sort of derogatory comments about his personal life – very shallow. It's always nice to hear people take their problems and/or challenges and face them with success. It's just good to know he's back in the running again – and I will support him by seeing this lastest movie for sure!!

L.A. Helvenston   December 19th, 2008 1629 GMT

Mickey Rourke is one of the great actors of this generation. He did such fine work in 'Diner', 'Pope of Greenwich Village', 'Barfly', 'Rumble Fish', and his few cameo parts in more recent films. I can't believe people are talking about his face. Man, if it would be an actress who had 'work done', no one would say anything negative. Judge him on his work onscreen, not his face alone. Obviously the man can act, and can do a tremendous variety of roles. I don't think he'll win the Oscar, since it appears to be the year for the lead role from 'Milk'-yet at least Rourke is finally getting the much deserved recognition he deserves from decades of delivering great performances. He is the real deal.

Kathi O.   December 19th, 2008 1656 GMT

I loved Mickey's OLD FACE. That Mickey was FINE. He must have a tortured inside, and he wanted his face to display that tortured inside.

Susan   December 19th, 2008 1721 GMT

Also a long time fan since Diner and see his small role in Body Heat. He's great in Angel Heart too.

j troelstra   December 19th, 2008 1755 GMT

Rourke bomeback???
How about Sin City?
everyone forgot about that one?

Abba   December 19th, 2008 1759 GMT

NOT the comeback of the decade – Meryl Streep in Mama Mia – what was she thinking...! Oh, and add Pierce Brosnan for good measure... And if ever Johnny Depp wants to make a comeback 10 years from now sit him down to watch endless re-runs of Sweeney Todd... some people just shouldn't do musicals...but then again – no one should do musicals!

Theada Palmer   December 19th, 2008 1825 GMT

I love Mickey! Always have, always will.
There was nothing more sexier than 91/2 weeks.................... Sin City role, awesome! He's a wonderful actor who should definitely win his Oscar............., so his private life is/was a mess, so what? Let's see, shall we name a few others who share the same "messed up life" or shall we just remember them all for their fine attributes to roles that will be remembered for a lifetime???????????????
Mickey is Mickey, so be it...............

minp pump   December 19th, 2008 2003 GMT

i hope it does not kill him – he will not win – but he can ace some parts if he can keep it together – he is a real life bad ass-

they pay a lot for people to play one

Sean   December 19th, 2008 2151 GMT

What are you talking about comeback!? The Fountain was fantastic. DA can do no wrong.

Brian Holder   December 19th, 2008 2226 GMT

John Travolta´s was one of the biggest comebacks in recent times. And he did not receive an Oscar. So I guess it depends on the competition.

dcguy47   December 20th, 2008 208 GMT

Gosh – I thought he was gay – saw the spread in Architectural Digest of his pad in New York – very very over the top. And, he had a couple of little dogs. Oh well, I guess it pays to play straight.

wisdksta   December 20th, 2008 404 GMT

I have not seen the movie at this time, I have watched trailers of it , because of all the hype he is receiving from the movie and needed to see what the heck they were talking about,
Well, from the trailer you can see MR, not so attractive any longer, but does fit into the wrestling role quite well, you see some lines from different scenes, you see interaction with other characters, then when its over, I said to myself I must see this movie, if it is as goods as the trailer and MR shows up the entire film as he did in those few minutes of trailer it going to be a great movie, may not mean comeback for him, but he may get some needed attention

comesbacks
john travolta – pulp fiction
charlie sheen – 2 and 1/2 men(for that fact Jon Cryer also)

PIXIE   December 20th, 2008 1010 GMT

YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PIXIE   December 20th, 2008 1013 GMT

MICKEY R. NEEDS SERIOUS HELP ON THAT FACE MAKE UP OR NOT. NO COMEBACK CAN OVERCOME HIS SEEDY LIFESTYLE. AND YES IT IS YUCK.
JOHN TRAVOLTA WAS ALWAYS UNDERESTEMATED.

bill   December 20th, 2008 1705 GMT

I'm a 70 year old actor with so so talent and have always wondered why people passed up Micky. I believe it is because he is so powerful people don't want to feel what he yanks out of him. I wish I had had a third of his talent. Iv'e seen them all and just give myself over to the story. Try it, comeback, smumback, he never left.

George Selimos   December 20th, 2008 1734 GMT

Wrestling in America is part of its culture just as ballet is in Europe. That's part of who we are like it or not.
For millions of men watching wrestling never loses its appeal no matter how many documentries & books come out slagging it. This will give this movie a huge advantage right off the top. As far as Rourke it would be interesting to see how some of the past great superstars of wrestling like Bret Hart & the Funk brothers react. I would imagine Rourke probably studied some of their history and matches . I'm glad Rourke keeps coming back,America is great!

ssentongo julius   December 20th, 2008 1906 GMT

No one has gat the right to jugde the man.the media in hollywood meks an breaks down p'ple just lik that, they just vie 4 p'ple's blood.america shld learn to appreciate.

Rob Kirbyson   December 20th, 2008 1929 GMT

Rourke is a fine actor. All actors have a few bum films and Rourke has had his share. You need only watch 'Rumblefish' and 'Angel Heart' to see how well polished and convincing Rourke is. I hope this film pays off for him because he is a craftsman and not just a dollar engine with big teeth and a nice face.

rick segal   December 21st, 2008 339 GMT

Grew up with Mickey at Beach High-shared his ups and downs throughout his career but say what you want, Mickey never changed, for good or bad and yet he still can show his movie brillance once more time after all these years. He has taken many blows in life, yes much of his own doing, but he show he is a true champion and getting up off the canvas one more time to score a knockout! Proud of you!!

D. Cline   December 21st, 2008 659 GMT

Pixie, learn to spell correctly. Your ignorance of a very talented actor is showing. Mickey Rourke is a wonderful actor. What does his face have to do with his acting ability? Bet you are a Hannah Montana fan.

Scott   December 21st, 2008 1454 GMT

Travolta – Pulp Fiction

Joe the reader   December 21st, 2008 1506 GMT

mickey is the man , bullet is a great movie along with barfly ,, he's the man!

LBW   December 21st, 2008 2200 GMT

I am glad for his comeback, but I saw his interview with Mat Lauer and I was surprised to see him in sunglasses and to me his speach was slurred. He looked pretty rough. Has he really come back?

Roberta   December 22nd, 2008 013 GMT

Excuse me, for those of you who think one has to be good looking to make it as an actor, does the name Jack Nicholson mean anything to you? Mr Nicholson is not handsome but had/has a very good movie career. Ditto Forest Whitaker. Acting does count. Yes, Mickey Rourke looks beat down, but so what. He can act and does it very well.

leonard   December 22nd, 2008 133 GMT

Mickey Rourke has always been a fine fine actor. His debut in Body Heat still is vivid in my mind. His choices of roles over the years has been the problem, and now that he has been given the gift that few actors who stumble receive, that being another chance, hopefully he won't fall prey to bad judgement once again. I'm honestly not sure which way he will go.

Tom Culver   December 22nd, 2008 509 GMT

Mickey Rourke does look like poop. He was his best as a diehard boozer in the Bukowski book turned movie Barfly "I don't dislike other people, i just know I feel better when there not around". Maybe this is the role he needs!

Sue   December 24th, 2008 1724 GMT

I can't find any info about the death of Majel Barrett Roddenberry on CNNC – did she complete all the voice work for the newest StarTrek movie??

This will win an Oscar for Best Actor, I want to see this movie again, for the talent in this actor. Some parts were so difficult to watch, I was just torn with pain for this guy who was a nice man who made wrong choices and we all know people who have made wrong choices and end up like this. For the poeple who choose for Oscar Wins, this Actor should be and hopefully takes Oscar home.

Thank you Mr. Aronofsky for this Movie

Spartacus From Montreal   January 15th, 2009 1821 GMT

Mickey,

last time I saw ya was in ANGEL HEART.

all I gotta say is your were great back then, andf even having seen 9 1/2 17 times, damn bassinger was Hot back then, I t still had NOTHING ON THIS.

you do not deerve an oscar for this ...YOU DESERVE TEN OF THEM !!!

THAT WAS INFINITELY BETTER THAN HEATH LEDGER AS THE JOKER, AND I ABSOLUTERLY LOVED THAT, BUT MY COMMENT, I THINK, SPEAKS TO HOW INCREDIBLE A PERFORMNACE THIS

IMO THE CRITICS HAVE IT ALL WRONG ALREAD

IT AIN'T A COMEBACK PERFROMANCE THAT MAY OR MAY NOT RESERCT A CAREER... CAUSE WE ALL KNEW AFTER ANGEL HEART THAT YOU HAD THIS KINDA THING IN YOU

WHAT IT IS...

...IS ONE THE SINGLE GREATEST AMERICAN MOTION PICTURE ACTING PERFROMANCES IN THE HISTORY OF HOLLYWOOD !!!

IT IS ALSO NOTHING LESS THAN THAT!

AND MAY EVEN BE MUCH MORE THAN THAT !!!

IT MAY THE MOST IIMPORTANT PERFROMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN HOLLYWOOD EVER!

IT SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO THE SOCIAL CONDITION OF "AGING"
WHICH WE ALL KNOW IS THE SINGLE BIGGEST DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGE HAPPENING IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW...

AND IS AN INSPIRATIONAL BEACON FOR ANYONE THAT SEES IT !!!

THANK YOU MICKEY !!!

guy   January 18th, 2009 1245 GMT

Mickey is great actor, who I've always identified with. Keep Rocking Mickey. I think you are one of very feww people out there who live according to your convictions. go on and win that oscar.

Bernie   January 22nd, 2009 635 GMT

John Travolta has to be the real comeback kid. His career before Pulp Fiction was forgettable, other than his dancing to the great music of the Bee Gees in Saturday Night Fever.

Since Pulp Fiction, most of his work has been entertaining, apart from one or two questionable roles, Battlefield Earth for one. All in all, his film career has been far better the second time around.

As for Mickey Rourke, well, he still has the perfect face for radio.

tammy   February 20th, 2009 1036 GMT

the movie "thicker than blood" you Mickey, are good, i've loved them all.
